Color varies with habitat from tan to reddish-brown to gray. We saw this one in southeast Tucson in April 2008. He stopped and let us take these pictures of him. Afterwe were done he stuck around for a while watching us, then went into the shade and he became even harder to see

These feed mostly on Ants, which are hard to digest, so they eat a lot of them.

A very, er, regal lizard if I ever saw one.
He (she?) would make a great logo for an Arizona arms manufacturer. I for one would buy a quality AK with this lizard engraved on the receiver. Maybe even a nice bas-relief engraving on the buttstock. Way cooler than those traditional duck engravings on custom shotguns.
A very handsome little devil for sure!
